Kevin Nowlan
Tomorrow Stories, Batman: Sword of Azrael, Dr. Strange
About:
Kevin Nowlan is a comic artist whose work spans penciling, inking, coloring, and lettering. Often described as an “artist’s artist,” he is known for his command of the entire creative process—from design and draftsmanship to storytelling and dramatic expression.
He first came to prominence in the early 1980s through illustrations in fan publications such as The Comics Journal and Amazing Heroes. His professional debut followed with Doctor Strange #57 (February 1983) for Marvel Comics, beginning a career that would include work for DC Comics and other major publishers.
In 1992, Nowlan inked Batman: Sword of Azrael, the miniseries that introduced the character Azrael. He also illustrated “The Castle” in Vertigo Jam #1 (August 1993), featuring the Sandman as part of “The Kindly Ones” arc. Among his most notable contributions is the co-creation of Jack B. Quick with writer Alan Moore, appearing in Tomorrow Stories under the America’s Best Comics imprint.
Though much of his work is as an inker, Nowlan has also provided pencils and lettering, and is widely recognized as a cover illustrator. His work extends into animation, where he contributed character designs to Batman: The Animated Series, including The Penguin, The Mad Hatter, and Man-Bat.
His style emphasizes facial expression and body language, giving his characters a natural sense of movement and personality that often pushes beyond traditional comic-book conventions.
